Escaline, or 3,5-dimethoxy-4-ethoxyphenethylamine, is a substituted phenethylamine featuring a phenyl ring bound to an amino -NH2 group through an ethyl chain. Escaline contains two methoxy functional groups CH3O- which are attached to carbons R3 and R5 as well as an additional ethoxy group at carbon R4 of the phenyl ring. Escaline is the 4-ethoxy analog of mescaline.

Escaline HCl (escaline hydrochloride) is a synthetic psychedelic compound belonging to the phenethylamine family, closely related to mescaline. Escaline is an analog of mescaline with a slightly modified chemical structure, which includes an ethoxy group in place of one of the methoxy groups found in mescaline. This structural change results in a different potency and duration of effects.

As with other phenethylamines, escaline produces a range of psychoactive effects, including:

  • Visual and auditory hallucinations
  • Enhanced colors and patterns
  • Changes in thought processes
  • Mood elevation and euphoria
  • Heightened sensory perception

In its HCl form (hydrochloride), escaline is more stable and easier to measure, typically available as a crystalline powder or in capsules. The effects of escaline are said to be slightly milder and less intense than mescaline, but it still induces psychedelic experiences, often described as “serene” or “gentle” in comparison to more potent psychedelics.

The duration of effects is generally 8–12 hours, with a gradual onset that leads to a peak experience, followed by a smooth comedown.

Escaline is classified as a research chemical, meaning that it has a limited history of human use, and its safety profile, risks, and long-term effects are not well studied. Like other psychedelics in this category, its legality varies by country, and users should be aware of the legal status of escaline in their region.
